Commander of troops occupying Providence seeks excuses

The meeting between the military and the seven residents - including relatives of the three dead - was in the battalion headquarters in the suburb of Santo Cristo, in the central region of the city, which is close to the hills of Providence and Mining, where the victims would have been delivered to members of a faction of traffickers.

From the outside of headquarters, shortly before the meeting, a demonstrator took the clothes in sign of protest. He said it was approached by a military, which would have asked if portava any weapon. The President of the Association of Residents of the community, Vera Melo, however, said the man who took the clothes, identified as Nelson, not lives in Morro da Providência and does not represent the community formally.

The general said that the decision to stay or die should not be taken by the Ministry of Defence in the coming hours. He said the priority at present, is to finish 20 houses that are destelhadas, but depends on a decision to be taken in Brasilia or, in Rio, the Minister for Defence, Nelson Jobim.

The workers who work on the hillside have declared their intention to complete the works since the military will withdraw from Morro da Providência, where the Department of City develops a project called Social Cement, which is inspiring Senator Marcelo Crivella (PRB-RJ) .

The relatives of the victims were accompanied by lawyers who were willing to initiate actions to claim for compensation to the Union

The police investigates whether the victims came to be taken to the barracks before the crime.
