'Slight slowdown in GDP was desirable', says Mantega

The Minister of Finance, Guido Mantega, said this Tuesday (10) that a "slight slowdown" of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first quarter of this year, as detected by the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), was " desirable "for which there was a" convergence "between supply and demand for products and services. For all this year, the expectation is that the minister's GDP grows 5%, against 5.4% increase recorded in 2007.

The numbers of IBGE show that the GDP rose 5.8% in the first quarter of this year, against 6.2% in the last three months of 2007. "We play a little in boiling water. In the last quarter of last year, demand for products and services, around 8.6%, was very heated," said Mantega. He recalled that the GDP figures released this Tuesday show a lower growth of demand, of 6.6% as against the last three months of last year.
