With more visibility, radar indicates 1,123 km ² of deforestation in the Amazon

The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) reported, on the afternoon of Monday (2), data on deforestation in the Amazon Legal, referring to April this year. According to the system hold (Deforestation Detection of real-time) there was an increase in alerts of deforestation in the region. In March 2008, was 145 km ² warning of deforestation in April, this number rose to 1,123 km ² (area equivalent to the city of Rio de Janeiro - 1,182 km ²).

According to the Inpe, the increase was noted in terms of the greater power of viewing the satellite. In March, 78% of Legal Amazon was hidden by clouds, and in April, only 53% of the region was under clouds.

The hold was designed as a warning system to support the supervision and control of deforestation. "They are cutting raso mapped areas and areas of process of deforestation by forest degradation. Because of the limited resolution of the system, it is possible to detect, just, polygons of deforestation larger than 25 hectares. Because the cover of clouds, not all major deforestation of 25 hectares are identified by the system, "said John Vianei Soares, general coordinator of earth observation.

Mato Grosso and Roraima are two states with the largest area deforested, according to the Inpe. In March, Mato Grosso had 112.4 km ² warning of deforestation, and 69% of its area covered by clouds. Roraima, allowing good viewing, was 18.8 km ² warning of deforestation.

In April, Mato Grosso presented 794.1 km ² of warnings of deforestation, with only 14% of its area covered by clouds. Roraima was 284.8 km ² warning of deforestation, with 18% of its area covered.
