Man who tried to assassinate former French President Chirac is released
A French right-wing extremist who tried to kill former President of France Jacques Chirac during a parade on Bastille Day in 2002 was released earlier this month, the France Soir newspaper said on Saturday.
Maxime Brunerie fired a rifle at Chirac as he passed by him at the beginning of the traditional parade of Bastille Day on July 14, 2002 in Paris's main avenue, the Champs-Élysées. He said at the time that he wanted "his name to stay for the story."
Brunerie was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was released on August 3 after serving three quarters of his sentence, the newspaper said, quoting his lawyer, Sebastien Tesler.
"He totally absorbed the lessons of his time imprisoned and actions for which he was accused, despite spending seven long years in prison," Tesler said the newspaper.
